Starting Your Own Media Diary

By Nicholas Neyhouse on January 26, 2015

Each month I personally, and a lot of other people I would assume, consume a lot of media. I find it difficult not to consume media, because of the vast power of the internet, and the constant bombardment of new things to enjoy. We live in an age where the ability to share and receive information exponentially grows by the second, and I may slightly abuse this technology to get the most out of it.

I propose an idea of creating an online diary of the media that you consume each month. This could include books, movies, t.v. shows, games, music, or anything that you took a part in throughout the month, and would like to share with the internet. I recently tumbled upon my friend’s media diary on tumblr (haha see what I did there…), and really enjoyed seeing what he had liked or not liked throughout the months.

I’ll put a link to his media library for the second half of January at the bottom of the article.

How you design and distribute a media diary changes from person to person. You do not necessarily even have to share it with the internet, and it could act as a personal collection of media you consume. But if you do share your media diary online, your friends can know what you thought of certain shows and movies, and then try out that media for themselves.

I personally really appreciate the simplistic ascetic of my friend Maxwell’s media diary. He collects a picture of the album, movie, or whatever he consumed, and then places them all side by side, and then below the collage of images he rates each work. He gives it a number out of 10, and in previous months has given a small write up about each item.

There are many reasons that someone may want to make a media diary, but for me the reasons point to keeping a collection of the things that I consume. Each of the items that you put in your media library don’t need to be new for that month, but they should try to be new items for you.

So, without further ado, here is my media diary for the month of January.
